How to Advertise Your Photography

So you’ve just recently gotten into the professional photography field. You have experience with the camera, you have good equipment, and you have talent… so what is holding you back? You have to remember that photography is a business as well as an art. You have to be part businessman, and that means knowing how to sell your wares. Advertising is part of the game.

Whether you’re a freelance photographer or it’s your full-time business, you need exposure, especially just starting out. Here are a few tips to help you better maneuver the marketplace:

First of all, you should have a website. The internet is the most powerful tool available to any businessperson today. You should have your site filled with your portfolio of pictures and any other relevant information. Then you need to move to social networking, like Facebook. You should send links to your site to all of your friends Facebook pages, most of them won’t mind helping you out by re-posting.

Facebook also allows you to make a page for your business, and fill it with your photos. Anyone who likes your work can add you as a friend and follow your progress. Once you start gaining friends online, you’ll be surprised how quickly they add up and help grow your business. All of those followers also act like an organic advertising machine, telling their friends about you and re-posting your links.

Also, have a good number of business cards made up, and don’t be afraid to visit local shops to spread the word. Dropping off a few business cards at the local wedding shop or community center can boost your client list as well. If you can fit a small price list on your card, that may help set you apart from other photographers. If you’re unsure about how much to charge, try looking online at how much similar photographers in your area charge. Or even check out professional photography establishments, like Glamour Shots prices reviews, to get a general idea of rates.

Whatever you have to do to get noticed, even if means heading out to actual weddings or other local events and handing out business cards or promotional discount coupons. These are the kinds of things you need to do when you’re just starting out. It is worth it though, if you’re doing what you love.
